From 13 Systems to a Unified Customer View with Microsoft Fabric

DCC Energi moves from system silos to a data-driven energy company.
With a modern data platform built on Microsoft Fabric, there has been a concrete and measurable shift in DCC Energi's ability to work with customer data.

The challenge

DCC Energi had a clear strategic ambition: one customer, one relationship. However, the existing system landscape made this difficult to achieve in practice.

As a result of growth and acquisitions, customer data had become fragmented across 13 ERP and sales systems. Each system operated with its own customer definitions, data models and integration logic. The same customer existed in multiple versions without a common reference, making it difficult to create a consistent and connected customer journey.

We knew we had a data challenge. But it wasn't until we mapped the full landscape that the scale became clear - 13 systems with 13 different versions of the same customer and no common reference. That is not a foundation on which you can build a data-driven business.

Three key barriers defined the situation:

The result was an organisation highly dependent on manual processes and specialist knowledge, where analysis was time-consuming and difficult to scale. At the same time, the company's growth ambitions were constrained by an architecture that did not support a unified customer view.

The solution

Rather than continuing to build on existing integrations, DCC Energi chose to rethink the foundation of its data architecture.

Building on strategic platform choices including Salesforce, Microsoft Business Central, Cloud Datahub and Microsoft Fabric, DCC Energi established a data-centric architecture in which customer data is extracted from individual systems and consolidated in a shared data layer.

We helped DCC Energi implement a modern data platform on Microsoft Fabric based on a layered medallion architecture, where data is structured and refined across bronze, silver and gold layers. This ensures high data quality, traceability and the ability to reuse data across business areas and use cases.

The approach is based on three design principles:

Rather than replacing existing systems, DCC Energi established an independent data foundation that could evolve in parallel with day-to-day operations. This decoupled data from individual systems and turned it into an independent foundation for DCC Energi's digital ambitions.

The data platform is not an isolated IT project, but a central part of the modernisation strategy we have defined for DCC Energi. By bringing customer data together on a shared foundation, we are creating the conditions needed to succeed with digital transformation across the business.

The resultat

The data platform is a key enabler for achieving DCC Energi's strategic objectives:

In addition, the initiative has highlighted differences in data definitions across the organisation and created the foundation for a common language around data and customers.

Overall, data has gone from being a limiting factor to becoming an active foundation for DCC Energi's business ambitions.

The collaboration

We partnered with DCC Energi throughout the transformation journey - from analysis to implementation and organisational adoption.

The work has included analysing business processes and data requirements, establishing shared customer definitions and standards, and designing and implementing the modern data platform on Microsoft Fabric. The collaboration has also focused on data quality, testing and stabilisation, as well as onboarding and organisational adoption.

The partnership has been characterised by close alignment between business and technology, with the solution continuously adapted to specific needs and priorities. This has ensured that the platform not only works from a technical perspective, but also creates tangible value in the organisation's day-to-day operations.
