How The Danish Cancer Society creates better user experiences

8 million visits in a year -or 22,000 visits per day. The Danish Cancer Society’s website is widely used by patients, relatives, and healthcare professionals.

The challenge

The organization’s previous website was built on an outdated and complex CMS solution with custom-developed applications and tailored functionalities. Technically and in terms of user experience, it was no longer up to modern standards.

Therefore, the organization needed a more accessible website, especially since seven out of ten users visit cancer.dk from their mobile devices.

The solution

We developed the website with a sharp focus on the four main principles of WCAG: perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust content presentation.

Ensuring accessibility requires that users can navigate the site using only a keyboard or with the support of a screen reader.

Compliance with Web Accessibility Requirements (WCAG 2.1)

WCAG 2.1 stands for Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.

The standard that Danish web accessibility legislation follows is called WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines). The WCAG standard rests on four core principles.

A website must be: 1) perceivable, 2) operable, 3) understandable, and 4) robust.

The four principles are broken down into 13 guidelines, each with its own success criteria, against which accessibility is measured.

The Danish Cancer Society requires that its new website meet the legal accessibility requirements, also known as WCAG 2.1.

As an NGO, the Danish Cancer Society is not obligated to comply with the legislation — for now, only public sector organizations are subject to web accessibility requirements.

Even so, the organization wants to meet the standard. It's about being accessible to the people who need it, and since cancer patients can experience visual impairments or reduced functional ability as a result of illness or treatment, this makes good sense.

Likewise, more than half of cancer survivors experience late effects, whether physical or psychological health problems that can cause fatigue, anxiety, pain, or cognitive challenges.

We are by far the largest Danish-language website on cancer, with many relevant users who rely on our content. It simply wouldn’t work if people couldn’t access our site due to a disability.

Our approach

The Result

The Danish Cancer Society’s new web platform is a prime example of how technical expertise can be combined with a strong commitment to accessibility, ensuring compliance with the four key principles of WCAG 2.1.

The collaboration has resulted in a series of value-creating initiatives

The new website has become easier to understand – partly through a carefully considered color palette, which not only makes the site more visually appealing but also accessible to users with color blindness and similar visual impairments.

A responsive design strategy ensures the site has become more usable and just as user-friendly on a mobile phone as on a computer. This is essential at a time when many people access the internet via mobile. Screen reader technology has also been a focus, ensuring that blind and visually impaired users can navigate the site without assistance.

Today, the website is intuitive, easy to use, and therefore more understandable. Consistent navigation structures and design elements help users quickly become familiar with the site's functions, reducing confusion and improving the user experience.

Our technical expertise has helped ensure the site works flawlessly across different technologies and browsers. This ensures longevity and accessibility, regardless of which assistive tools or technologies users prefer to use.
